Alice in Wonderland

Saw “Alice in Wonderland” tonight. The story is more fun than “Avatar”, but “Avatar”‘s art was way better. I’m comparing it to “Avatar” because of the 3D aspect, plus the introduction of the Bandersnatch was a scene straight from Avatar. It’d be nice to see a crazy-world film like Wonderland be a little more crazy and colorful. A bit too much of it made me think of “A Nightmare Before Christmas”. However, Alice was made in 2d, then converted to 3D later in production, I believe, so the colors may have been more prominent in the original format, but I suspect Tim Burton’s color swatch may just naturally be a little smoky across the board.. Perhaps the 3D glasses taint it a bit. Perhaps Tim Burton is developing cataracts. Perhaps I am. That said, despite the constant nagging of “been there, saw that”, “Alice in Wonderland” was a fun film and I’d recommend seeing it in the theater.

——– On a side note, the movie makes me want to dig out a copy of American McGee’s “Alice” video game, one of the very few video games I’ve actually played all the way through. (I think only Diablo 2 sits alongside Alice) ——-

OLYMPIC CLOSING CEREMONIES WINTER 2010

A friend mentioned that during the closing ceremonies of the 2010 winter Olympics, women were not represented in the cliche-joke part of the show. She pointed out that the RCMP were all men, except for the women dancing in their skimpy outfits. The hockey players, all men. I pointed out that the piece was a parody of Canada, and what did it matter if women were represented beyond dancing girls or not. I was told that if I didn’t get it, I never would. I then pointed out to her that women were indeed represented in the cliches of the closing ceremonies:

She was not impressed.
